Free Online Games for Seniors

Every game on this list is free and plays in a web browser on a computer, an iPad or a phone. You do not need to download or install anything. We checked each site in October 2026: do you have to sign up, does it show ads, and is it easy to read?

Most free game sites are paid for by advertising, and this site is too. We say which sites show ads, so there are no surprises.

Card games

Solitaire is the favourite card game of many older adults: you play alone, at your own speed, and every game is different. On Solitaire for Seniors, the cards are large and you tap a card to move it, so you do not need a steady hand to drag. Undo and Hint are free and unlimited. If the cards are still too small, see large print solitaire for ways to make them bigger.

For other card games, CardGames.io has Hearts, Spades, Gin Rummy, Cribbage, FreeCell and many more. You play against the computer, so you never wait for other players.

Word and number games

Wordle gives you one five-letter word to guess each day, in six tries. Because there is only one puzzle a day, it is easy to make it part of your morning routine. Many families share their results with each other.

Crosswords are free on both AARP Games and Sixty and Me Games. Sixty and Me has a new daily crossword. If the letters look small, zoom the page with your browser.

Word search is a relaxed choice when you do not feel like a challenge. TheWordSearch.com has thousands of puzzles on themes from animals to TV characters.

Sudoku uses numbers, but no maths. Sudoku.com has large number buttons and lets you start at Easy.

Puzzles and memory games

Jigsaw puzzles online need no table space, and pieces never get lost. Jigsaw Explorer posts a new free puzzle every day.

Mahjong solitaire is a tile-matching game: remove pairs of matching tiles until the board is clear. You can play it on 247 Mahjong, AARP Games or Sixty and Me Games.

Memory matching means turning over cards two at a time to find pairs. Our memory game for seniors has large pictures, no timer and three levels, from 6 to 12 pairs.

Chess and strategy

Lichess is a free chess site with no ads. Choose "Play against computer" and pick a level from 1 (very easy) to 8. You can also send a link to a friend or grandchild and play them online.

Helping a parent get started

  1. Start with one game. A short list of favourites is easier than a page of choices.
  2. Put it on the Home Screen. Then the game opens with one tap. See how to do this on an iPad.
  3. Make the page bigger. On a computer, hold Ctrl (⌘ on a Mac) and press +. On a tablet, turn the screen sideways.
  4. Explain the ads. Anything marked "Advertisement" is not part of the game and does not need to be tapped.
  5. Agree on one safety rule. A game in the browser never needs a download, a password or a card number. If a pop-up asks for one, close the page.

Frequently asked questions

Are these games really free?

Yes. All the games in the table are free to play. Most of the sites are paid for by advertising. Some also sell an optional subscription that removes ads.

Do I need to download anything?

No. Every game on this list plays in a web browser such as Safari, Chrome or Edge.

Which free games are best for poor eyesight?

Choose games with large, high-contrast pieces, such as large-card solitaire, memory matching with big pictures, or sudoku with big number buttons. You can also zoom any web page with your browser.

Are there free games without ads?

Lichess, for chess, has no ads at all. Most other free sites show ads. On this site, ads stay outside the game and never cover the cards.

Can I play these games on an iPad?

Yes. Open the website in Safari and play. Turning the iPad sideways often makes the game bigger.

Are online games safe for seniors?

The games are safe to play. Be careful with ads and pop-ups: a real game never asks you to install software, enter a password or pay to keep playing. If a message says your device has a virus, close the page.
